Internet Reviews

Contribute 4 (MAC/WIN)
Contribute 4 provides to web publishing what desktop publishing applications provide to print publishing: The elimination of coding and the complexity of arcane procedures and techniques. The program acts essentially like an interactive Web browser, enabling users to access their sites (or those they've been given access to), edit pages in near realtime using uncomplicated tools and menus, and publish their update or new pages immediately. The program fulfills a vision for Web publishing that it be transparent and as easy to use as a word processor. More complex publishing tasks can be handled with Dreamweaver, which integrates with Contribute 4.

Contribute 4 adds several new features that simplify the ways in which users can publish to the Web. The first of these is support for publishing to a blog. Blog entries are now easier than ever, and existing Web content can be added to a blog entry though drag and drop. Contribute 4 also adds two buttons to the user's browser supporting direct access to editing the current page or adding a blog entry.

Microsoft Office users can publish content directly from Word, Excel, and Outlook; and users can now integrate images, movies, and Adobe Flash Video in Web sites and blogs by using drag and drop during the editing process.

If maintaining websites and blogs has become burdensome, Contribute 4 should be a welcome solution. $149

RapidWeaver 3.5 (MAC)
RapidWeaver 3.5 is certainly at the top of our list of easy to use Web page editors. The publishers have done well in hiding the complexity of HTML code, and providing a welcome, inviting interface that is clean and easy to use.

The opening window is totally free of any clutter, consisting only of a few buttons, one of which is the + button. Pressing this button results in a list of various kinds of pages that the user might want to create. These include Blog, Contact Form, File Sharing, HTML Code, iFrame, Movie Album, Offsite Page, Photo Album, QuickTime, and Styled Text. Each one of these choices is accompanied by descriptive text, such as "Share your photos with friends, family and co-workers" associated with the Photo Album selection. When selecting the "Styled Text" option, the most flexible choice, the user can compose pages that are in WYSIWYG format, with control over font attributes, text runarounds, and the capability to drag and drop images, movies and files.

One of the most powerful features of the program is the use of Themes. A theme is a design style that affects the look of the entire site. Pressing the Theme button reveals the Theme Drawer containing thumbnail images of all of the available themes. Clicking on a theme and then selecting the Preview button provides a view of how the user's site looks in a particular theme.

The user can also see the actual HTML code that is generated in the background by pressing the Code button. Advanced users can add page prefix, CSS, or JavaScript code manually by using the Page Inspector window. These capabilities are purely optional, and a lack of coding knowledge will not impede any user.

Completed sites can be saved to a local hard drive, or can be published directly to the Internet if the user has an FTP or .Mac account. Registered .Mac users have the easiest and quickest path to publishing their site since their log-in details should appear automatically. FTP server users need to know their username, password, server, and site path.

Readers should not be mislead by the ease by which the program functions, nor its modest cost. The publisher has listed over 2500 sites that have been composed using the software, many of which are very impressive, and decidedly professional. $39.95

1Passwd (MAC)
1Passwd is the ultimate password manager and form filler. Not only does it work with most Web browsers, providing custom extensions, but it integrates directly with the Mac OS X Keychain. Since it is the only password manager and form filler that works directly in the user's Web browser, it provides an unprecedented level of integration and functionality. Its database of passwords works across all supported browsers.

Not only does the program enable the user to manage hundreds of passwords simply with a single master key, but it can quickly generate an unlimited number of strong passwords. Strong passwords are created based on the maximum length of the password supported on a particular site. In addition, previously created passwords stored in Safari AutoFill or FireFox Password Manager can be imported directly into the program.

The form filler capability supports the definition of multiple identities and prevents phishing attempts by only filling in forms where there is an exact domain name match. It also defeats Key Loggers, which capture keystrokes, by filling in forms and logging into Web sites without using the keyboard or Clipboard.

The form filler can not only complete a Web form automatically, but it can submit it as well using a hot key.

Other program benefits include: automatic computer lock after a period of inactivity, or if the Macintosh sleeps; password backup to .Mac or a local or remote location; and more. $29.95

GarageSale 3.0.1 (MAC)
GarageSale 3.0.1 is the award-winning eBay client that provides the digital publisher with the composition tools necessary to compose attractive, attention-getting auction ads using a WYSIWYG interface. The program includes more than 80 design templates which are free of extra cost, and provides direct access to the user's iPhoto library and image capture from a connected iSight camera.

Users can schedule when auctions will run and can communicate with buyers using customizable templates to handle common questions and inquiries. Users can track their auctions from within the program as well as leave buyer feedback. This program not only simplifies the process of composing eBay auctions, it produces a better advertisement, and does so quickly and efficiently. $29.99

Miscellaneous News and Reviews

OmniDazzle (MAC)
OmniDazzle is a unique package of screen effects that endow the Macintosh mouse with a variety of new, eye-catching, personalities. All of the effects have the same objective, namely to highlight an area of the screen through the use of a visual effect. The effects are certain to enhance presentations, and to keep an audience focused on the screen. The effects include Pixie Dust (which sprays cascades of sparkling dust), Flashlight (which illuminates the mouse pointer location, dimming the background), Cutout (which uses various shapes to highlight text and other screen content), Sonar (which sweeps across the screen like real sonar signals in search of the mouse pointer location), Bullseye (which tags a bullseye to the mouse pointer location), and more. Reference Source Reviews

EndNote X (MAC/WIN)
EndNote X continues the long history of innovation for this bibliographic management software. Our previous reviews (
http://www.printerport.com/kdp/issues/old/v7n4.html#EndNote%206%20for%20Mac%20OS%20X%20and%20Windows%20(MAC/WIN), http://www.printerport.com/kdp/issues/old/v4n5.html#EndNote%203.0%20(MAC/WIN), http://www.printerport.com/kdp/issues/old/v6n4.html#EndNote%205%20(MAC/WIN), http://www.printerport.com/kdp/issues/old/v9n1.html#EndNote%20Version%207%20f%20(MAC), http://www.printerport.com/kdp/issues/old/v5n2.html#EndNote%204.0%20(MAC/WIN) http://www.printerport.com/kdp/issues/old/v4n3.html#EndNote%203.0%20(MAC/WIN), http://www.printerport.com/kdp/issues/v10n6.html#EndNote%209%20())

show the impressive development of this "best in class" application.

This new version, which is Intel native, adds several important features. Users can now store and link PDF files with EndNote libraries. This greatly extends the amount of information that can be stored with each reference. By simply dragging and dropping PDF files to an EndNote record users can significantly enhance their research workflow and overall productivity. When records are viewed, in up to eight fields (four of which are new), a new icon indicates those references having linked PDF files. The workflow is also improved by enabling the user to customize their EndNote toolbar, providing more immediate access to frequently used tools.

The Search function now includes two new options, "begins with" and "ends with," for word and field searching. The resources by which users can locate references and format bibliographies has been expanded to more than 800 on-line source connections, more than 540 import filters, and more than 2300 publishing styles. The use of on-line bibliographic databases is simplified by the capability to drag and drop references directly into the user's EndNote library.

The program continues to support Microsoft Word for Mac OS X and Windows, and adds full compatibility with EndNote libraries, including linked PDF files. Users can save their libraries in compressed form for easy transfer to a colleague, or for archiving. Users can also create bibliographies with other word processors, such as StarOffice, FrameMaker, AppleWorks, and others, as well as access their EndNote libraries on a Palm handheld device. $299.95

Fonts/Font Management

Veenix Font Tools (MAC)
Veenix Font Tools is the best collection of font utilities we have ever seen. We are rarely effusive about font tools, but this set of programs stands alone in terms of utility and scope.

The tool set enables the user to view their fonts quickly using the Visual Font Database System which shows active and inactive fonts in their actual typeface, identified by format, and sorted by any of a variety of criteria. Clicking on a font reveals a window displaying the full complement of font glyphs, with alternate views of Font Samples, a Font Comparison window, and Font Measurements. The Font Measurements window computes the cpp (characters per pica) measurement for various sizes of the selected typeface, measurements that are essential for copyfitting (we've never seen them displayed in any program).

Fonts can be activated or deactivated directly from the Visual Font Database window, and fonts can be activated from any file location (i.e. they need not be stored in the System Font Folder).

The Document Font Activator and Exporter allows the user to drag and drop a file or folder of files onto its window, or use the Open button, and scan the files to reveal the fonts that were used to create them. So long as the fonts are still available in the System, the user can activate or export them.

A single font, or a group of fonts can be exported easily by simply selecting them in the Visual Font Database window and selecting an Export option from the Actions menu. The user is prompted for a location in which to save the file(s). The user can also create a complete backup of their font library.

All fonts in the current sort can be viewed as a slide show using the Type Sampler Slide Show tool. The user can set the slide speed and control the progression. Through this view, and others, the user can print a sample or specimen sheet of the displayed font.

The user also has the option of creating a professional-looking type specimen book (or individual pages) with control over the layout, and customized text id and footer verbiage.

Other useful tools include an ASCII Chart, Measurement Conversions, Color Grabber, Screen Grab Tools, Proportion Calculator, and more. $49.95 for a single user, $179.95 for five users, and $359.95 for a site license.

Metroscript (MAC/WIN)
Metroscript is a unique font that truly gives the impression of characters having been designed by the hand of a master penman. Indeed, the designer, Michael Doret, is a talented artist, yet anyone using this font can compose text that has the look of custom typography. Not only do the characters all connect seamlessly, but the many alternates, ligatures, tails, and swashes provide an endless variety of custom variations.

Michael Doret comments that the style as been called "baseball" or "sports", but believes that the font's usefulness and application extends far beyond such a narrow classification. The font can certainly be used for a wide variety of applications in logo design, packaging design, advertising, commercial branding, signage, and for other everyday and special needs.

The family consists of MetroScript (the main font), MetroScriptAlt (alternate characters), MetroScriptLig (ligatures), MetroScriptSwash (swash characters), and MetroScriptTails (tails).

Digital publishers will enjoy using Metroscript since it provides such a rich set of typographic options. As an OpenType design, certain characters are technically aware of their positions, and appear differently if they are composed at the beginning or end of a word, or in proximity to a certain other character. $60

Digital Audio

Fission (MAC)
Fission is a no nonsense audio editor that works with MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, and AIFF audio file formats. Its strength is in its simplicity. It maintains audio quality by enabling editing in native formats without the need for re-encoding. It is the first and only lossless AAC editor for Mac OS X.

The program performs four basic functions: First it provides the capability to divide a long recording into multiple files. The user splits the long recording, and when it is saved or exported, Fission automatically makes a separate file for each clip. Using the Smart Split tool, the program will insert split points when it senses silence in the file. Second, it offers an easy way to remove unwanted clip segments, such as commericals. Third it provides the option of adding fade ins and fade outs. And finally, it gives users an easy way to produce ringtones for their MP3 or AAC-compatible cell phones. A very handy utility to have at hand. $32

Additions/Extensions Reviews

Overset Manager (MAC/WIN)
Overset Manager is a plug-in for Adobe InDesign and Adobe InCopy CS or CS2 that enables the user to maintain control over text length and text overset. Through the use of the plug-in the user can easily determine situations where a given document contains overset text frames. Such situations become immediately apparent when the user prints or exports a file.

With the use of the Overset Manager palette, the user can quickly see which text threads are overset, and can go immediately to that frame to perform the necessary editing. Preferences in the palette can be set to change the background color of overset frames and their position relative to their master frame.

The palette provides important information, such as showing exactly how much text (in characters or words) is required to fill a particular text thread...something vitally important to an editor. The user can also be informed of underset text frames, and is given an estimate of the number of missing lines. $99

20/20 Color MD Version 2.0 (MAC/WIN)
20/20 Color MD Version 2.0 provides the easiest and fastest method for color correcting digital images, accounting for color balance, brightness, saturation, and dynamic range (see our previous review at
http://www.printerport.com/kdp/issues/v10n5.html#20/20%20Color%20MD%20(MAC/WIN)). The publisher compares the use of the program to taking an eye exam in that the user is presented with a series of two preview images and is required to select the one that appears to be the best in each case. Through the use of the six-step Wizard, the program analyzes the responses and produces a color-corrected image, without the need for histograms, sliders, or other settings. $49.95

Font Editing

FontLab Studio 5 (MAC/WIN)
FontLab Studio 5 is the most complete and comprehensive tool for producing professional typographic fonts in all major outline formats, including Type 1, TrueType, Multiple Master, and OpenType. The program can import and export a wide variety of font formats, fulfilling virtually all of the needs of professional type designers, trade typographers, digital font foundries, and others who design, create, or modify fonts.

The program provides a rich set of specialized tools that deal with the specific design requirements of typographic forms. Tools such as Intersect Contours, Remove Overlap, and Check Connections have been devised for the unique construction of glyphs. The program also provides a sophisticated set of filters that can be applied to glyphs to alter their overall appearance. These include Bold, Outline, Shadow, and Bevel. The program documentation is quite in-depth, and consists of over 900 pages.

The program consists mainly of three user interface components. First is the Font Window which shows the font's character set. Second is the Glyph Window where the glyph shape is created. Third is the Metrics Window wherein the characterfit settings are made for metrics and kerning.

Users have a number of print-out options to test their designs at any point during the creative process. They can generate a Font Table, Glyph List, Font Sample, Font Waterfall, Glyph Sample, Glyph Waterfall, Kerning Table, or Quick Test. $649

Utility Reviews

Data Rescue II (MAC)
Data Rescue II is a critical award-winning tool for recovering data from a hard drive that will not mount, or exhibits signs of having become corrupt. Such a situation is absolutely devastating, especially in a high-pressure production environment. The software was designed first and foremost to transfer files safely from a damaged hard drive, rather than to try to repair the drive, a process that could damage any existing files. The recovered files are saved on a secondary drive; internal, external, or mounted on the network. In a situation like this the first objective is to salvage the filesÉthe drive is merely a consumable.

This latest version, which is a Universal binary, supports ten times more file types for content scanning than did the Data Rescue X version, and it operates significantly faster (see our previous review at http://www.printerport.com/kdp/issues/old/v8n1.html#Data%20Rescue%20v.10.0.4%20(MAC)). The software works by doing a comprehensive analysis of the drive surface, locating and re-assembling the various parts of each file, and then writing them safely to reliable media. The user can elect to recover all files or only certain ones. It retains the data, icons, dates, and folder hierarchy for all file types.

Digital camera users will appreciate that Data Rescue II can also recover digital pictures from camera media after the images have been deleted (and before the media has been re-written). It can also recover files on a drive that has been initialized by accident. The program is provided on a bootable CD. $99

iPaste (MAC)
iPaste extends the functionality of the Clipboard by storing frequently used clippings for reuse using hotkeys or a contextual menu. The program is a considerable time-saver and should be considered by every digital publisher, since they spend so much time at the keyboard, and iPaste is certain not only to save valuable time, but to reduce keyboarding errors by safely storing often-used text. In addition to storing text the program can store rich text, TIFF, PDF, PICT, JPEG, GIF, and others. $12.99

FoxTrot Personal Search 1.2 (MAC)
FoxTrot Personal Search 1.2 provides exceptionally fast access to indexed items, showing them in context, and for particular file types, with a full preview. These file types include word processing documents, PDFs, pictures, QuickTime movies, mp3 files, and others. Users select the folders that they need to search, and an index is built quickly. Folders can be added or removed as needed. The program is not meant to index entire hard drives, although it can do so. It is designed to provide the most efficient searching of folders in which a user has stored their most important files.

The search process is very flexible, and the user is provided with many options to include wildcards, cite exclusions, and specify very sophisticated search patterns which combine multiple criteria.

The program provides a unique dynamic categorization feature which allows the user to narrow selections based on file kind, age, or parent folder. Item hits are listed by relevance, with a visual indication of such, and buttons to directly open, reveal, get info, or preview a selected file. $35

Sync 6 Pro (MAC)
Sync 6 Pro is an easy-to-use back-up program with some incredibly unique features. The user can choose from common back-up schemes, such as backing-up their Home Folder, or their Entire System, or they can specify specific items. The specific items can be selected manually or through the use of a powerful set of rules that enable users to combine boolean criteria. They can then set where the back-up is to be stored (HFS+ formatted external hard drives, networked servers (Windows, Linus, etc.), or WebDAV (such as iDisk)), and set a schedule for executing routine back-ups.

What we haven't seen in other back-up applications is the capability to perform full N-way synchonizations and back-up between up to 64 directories/machines. This is especially useful for system administrators who deal with large groups of computers, such as in a lab.

The program utilizes a novel technology called ZeroScan, which can perform incremental back-ups up to 100 times faster than other products. Unlike other programs that need to scan every file and folder to compare them to the back-up copy, ZeroScan maintains "notes" on files as they are changed. When the back-up is executed it works from its short list of changes to update the back-up copy.

The entire back-up history is maintained in a database-driven log wherein the user can view, filter, and search. Other programs provide only a static text log. $45

File Management Reviews

FileBrowse (MAC)
FileBrowse provides an extraordinarily attractive means of browsing files and media, greatly extending the native capability of the Mac OS X Finder. Digital publishers will be impressed by its graphic elegance.

The program can display thumbnails for a variety of file types, including PDF, RTFD, and Word, in addition to images. Previews are shown in context, and folders appear in perspective, with soft shadows, and with 3D icons showing the items that they contain.

The presentation of large in-context zoomable previews is amazing. Information and related commands are displayed when a file or folder is selected, and the user sees the source folder, contents, info, and command options all in one window, sparing the user from opening and closing a series of windows, cluttering the screen, and essentially wasting time. In addition, movie and audio files can be played in position, and all pages of PDF files can be read in situ.

The program also provides powerful tools for grouping and sorting files and folders, extending the ease by which the user can store and retrieve their media assets. The video demo at http://www.filebrowse.com/video.html is well worth the time. $25

A neat feature is the built-in Web server that allows searching directly from a Web page. $19.95

Timbuktu Pro 8.6 (MAC/WIN)
Timbuktu Pro 8.6 is the latest version of what may be our most reviewed product. We've done eight reviews of Timbuktu through the years, the last of which was version 6 (
http://www.printerport.com/kdp/issues/old/v7n3.html#Timbuktu%20Pro%20Version%206%20(MAC/WIN)). We've followed this program because we have found it to be a vital network link between both similar and cross-platform computer systems, enabling users to fully control remote computers and easily transfer files between them.

This new version adds the capability to use Skype as a means of "tunneling" to connect two Timbuktu-enabled computers. A Skype tunnel can work through firewalls, NAT devices and routers, and joins the Internet, local networks, and modems as a connectivity option. Using the Skype contacts list, users can not only search for other Skype users, but search for and connect to other Timbuktu users.

The downloadable version is priced at $94.95 for a single pack (a copy is required for each connected computer); $179.95 for a twin pack; $629.95 for a ten pack; and $1649.95 for a thirty pack.

Number Press (MAC/WIN)
Number Press provides a unique and important function for those digital publishers who have a need to add unique numbering schemes to their documents. Such needs may apply to forms, NCR, raffle tickets, slips, coupons, book receipts, tags, and other items.

The program works by using a pre-designed document as a background template, much in the way that a variable data printing system works, with static content on the template, and variable (numbering in this case) data on the overlay. On the Mac the supported formats are PDF, EPS, TIFF, BMP, JPEG, GIF, and any QuickTime format. On Windows the formats are TIFF, BMP, JPEG, and GIF. The publisher recommends using PDF, which is only available on the Mac. As well, Macintosh users can print directly to PDF, producing a PDF file of each unique numbered document.

The program provides very flexible numbering options, allowing the user to set the start number, end number, increment, number of times the number is printed, if the count is up or down, the option to include leading zeros, and the number of times the number appears on the page. The user maintains complete control over the appearance of the number, including its font, style, size, prefix, and suffix.

The user sets the location of where the number or numbers are to appear, specifying their distance, in inches or centimeters, from the left and top. The Graphical Preview allows the user to see how the numbering will appear before committing to print. $49.95

Exposure and Lighting For Digital Photographers Only

The authors provide their professional insight and skill in explaining how to achieve the correct balance of light and shadow. The numerous photographs graphically demonstrate the effects of various lighting schemes.
