Every machine connected to the Internet must have an IP address. An IP address is the station identification that is sent with each request involving an Internet service, such as conducting a Telnet session, sending a file via FTP, or receiving a Web page. The IP address identifies where the request is coming from, and where the reply is to be sent. It doesn't matter how the computer is connected to the Internet through a T1, cable modem, or dial-in connectionit must have an IP address. Since there is a cost involved in obtaining an IP address, Internet Service Providers (ISP), and others responsible for Internet access management, often maintain a set of IP addresses that can be assigned dynamically, on an ""as needed"" basis, rather than assigned on a permanent (static) basis. This provides an efficient way to make a limited number of addresses serve a greater number of users, since it is unlikely that everyone will need an address simultaneously.
When an IP address is assigned dynamically, the client computer is assigned an address from the service provider's DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server. The IP number is likely to be different for each user session.
In a small office or home, multiple computers can share a single IP address with the use of an Internet router. The router is connected to a single cable or DSL modem. It manages the movement (routing) of packets of data between points on a network, and assigns addresses to the local computers that it serves. When the router handles a network request from one of its clients, it records its local address, and sends the request out under the single IP address that it has been assigned. When the response is returned, the router translates it and delivers it to the proper recipient.
An Internet router can be either software- or hardware-based. A software router is an application program that runs in the background on one computer on a LAN. Its advantages are that it is relatively inexpensive, and does not require a dedicated host. Its disadvantages are that any disruption of the host, such as a reboot, will cut off all Internet access for the LAN.
An Internet hardware router has the advantage of not running on a client computer, and therefore providing more reliable performance. It may also offer additional advantages that can not be simulated in software, such as providing a hardware firewall, that can protect the LAN from outside attacks.
The popularity of the Internet has spawned many software and hardware router solutions. Of particular note is the Linksys Instant Broadband EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router (BEFSR41), introduced in December, 1999 for under $200. This router, which connects to either a cable or DSL modem using a single IP address, can assign private IP addresses to up to 253 of the LAN clients that it supports. It does so using Network Address Translation (NAT), wherein the single Public IP address that has been assigned to it by the cable or DSL Internet provider, is translated into a series of addresses that are known only to the LAN clients. The router has its own DHCP server, and automatically assigns private addresses to all LAN clients. The router appears to the outside world as the only device on the LAN that is connected to the Internet.
The use of a firewall, while very useful in controlling access from intruders, can also restrict access from legitimate users. A Linksys EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router administrator can use the DMZ/Expose Host function, which dissembles one of the private IP addresses on one workstation, so that it is seen from the outside world by a public address. This is useful since a business user might need to provide remote access or control using a program such as Netopia Timbuktu. Similarly, a home user might want to support network game playing.
Since the router is the gateway through which all Internet traffic passes, it can be used to filter or restrict access to certain parts of the Internet.
A router, like the modem it connects to, must be a reliable component that
works to ensure maximum up-time. Any disruption to network traffic can be inconvenient
at best, and disastrous at worst. The front panel of the Linksys EtherFast®
Cable/DSL Router uses a series of LEDs to indicate network traffic and other
conditions, which is useful in monitoring system performance.*

Router Set-up. The back of the EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router has six ports.
Beginning on the left is the WAN (Wide Area Network) port, which is used to
plug in the cable or DSL modem. The next four ports, labeled 4 to 1, are Local
Area Network ports which are used to connect devices that are shared on the
network, such as print servers, file servers, remote hard drives, PCs, or other
peripherals. The final port is the Uplink, which is used to connect the router
to another switch or hub, to propagate the Internet connection to the entire
LAN.* This is accomplished by connecting the two devices with an Ethernet cable.

After the router is physically connected to the modem and the LAN, and is powered, it can be configured through a Web browser. This is done by typing in the router address (supplied by Linksys) in the browser's address box. The user is prompted for authorization at the administrator level. Successful access results in the display of the router's Setup page which contains the following fields:
Router Name & Domain NameThese fields may be required by the ISP, however leaving them blank will probably work.
LAN IP AddressThe router will supply default settings which, unless there are compelling reasons to change, should be left alone.
WAN IP AddressThis is the address that is provided by the ISP. If it is a static IP address it must be entered manually. If it is a dynamic IP address, the user clicks on Obtain an IP Address Automatically.
This completes the Setup page. Next, the user selects the DHCP tab and selects the Enable option, unless a DHCP server is already operating on the LAN. This selection will result in the router assigning IP addresses to all LAN clients automatically. Here the user also enters the number of clients that will be served. This completes the router set-up and configuration.
The client configuration consists of opening the TCP/IP control panel and indicating that the IP address will be obtained automatically. This completes the client set-up and configuration.
Router Maintenance and Administration. The router contains an integrated circuit chip that controls its function. In order to monitor and control the operation of the router, the user types the router's IP address in a Web browser address window. Although the router ships with no password required, the manufacturer strongly suggests that one is applied by the system administrator. This prevents LAN users from changing the router settings independently.
The administrator has access to screens that display the current settings of the various fields that were set-up during the initial configuration. They may be modified if necessary.
Additional advanced administrative features include:
FiltersFilters can be applied to deny Internet access to specific users, either by entering their private IP address, or their network Port number (if connected directly to the router ports).
ForwardingPort forwarding is used to set-up public services, such as FTP or Web server access, from outside of the LAN.
Dynamic Routing or Static RoutingSettings in these screens are made to adjust for physical changes in the network layout, such as the addition of another router.
DMZ HostThis setting is used to expose one local user to the Internet for a special-purpose, such as video conferencing. Any Internet user outside of the LAN can access in/out data from the DMZ host.

Delirium is a large set of over 47 plug-ins for Adobe After Effects. The plug-ins are provided in three categories of effects: particle based simulations of real world events like fire and snow, effects that generate graphic elements for designers including Nexus and Visual Harmonizer, and production tools like Framing Gradients and Day for Night.
A feature of these plug-ins is what DigiEffects calls "AutoAnimation." This means that many of the plug-ins animate automatically without setting keyframes.
The real world simulation creative tools are based on highly advanced particle system based effects. These include bubbles, electrical arcs, fairy dust, fire, fireworks, muzzle flash, smoke, snowstorm, and sparks. All in all the effects provide the video professional with creative tools that can produce outcomes that are either too expensive or simply impossible to capture directly on film or tape. $695

Export Icon Version 1.1.2 (MAC)
Export Icon Version 1.1.2 is a plug-In for Adobe Photoshop that provides the user with the capability to export images as custom icon files. The icons can be created using the image's RGB pixel information to output 4-, 8- and 32-bit icons. The plug-in is available as a 10 trial free download, as a $14.95 on-line purchase, or on CD-ROM for $19.95.

FilterIt Version 3.0 is an incredibly useful set of creativity tools that is provided as a collection of plug-ins for Adobe Illustrator 8.0. It contains a total of 82 effects, some of which are, individually, worth the price of the set. Introduced to rave reviews in Japan, they are now available in the United States.
The Warp Tool provides 22 "envelopes" in which to distort type or graphics. The envelopes force their contents to conform to their shape, which may be pinched in the center, like an hourglass, or puffed out in the center, like a vase. The user can interact with any selection and create a custom warp effect. This level of interactivity is common across the set of plug-ins, and provides Illustrator with an enhanced design environment.
All of the tools are noteworthy, and some of the more interesting ones are the MetaBrush, which lets the user paint with the selected object; the Lens Tool, which applies a variety of lens effects over a portion of an object; and the AlignPoints Tool, which automatically pulls selected points into alignment.
Some of the filter effects are both dazzling and time-saving. The Live Circle filter, for example converts a single object into a circle composed of replicates of that object. As the original object is modified, all of the replicates are modified. The Live Neon filter produces very impressive neon effects, as does Live Border, Live Emboss, Live Shadow, Live Frame, Live Reflections, and others. All in all FilterIt is a wonderful toychest for serious designers. $129

Imposition Publisher v4.0 (MAC/WIN/UNIX)
Imposition Publisher v4.0 is a cross-publishing page imposition solution that deals flexibly with the positioning of pages for output on signatures. Although it is highly sophisticated and capable, it is easily learned and implemented. It can handle both PostScript and PDF in a single job, and can automatically extract most job-related information directly from a PostScript file, rather than inputting it manually. In addition, a single page of a multipage PostScript file can be replaced. Output can be in either PostScript or PDF format.
The program gains much of its uniqueness from its use of program drivers, as opposed to filters. Over 70 drivers, supporting all of the popular desktop publishing and word processing applications, are provided. Drivers make it possible, for example, to handle embedded fonts, including TrueType. The program does not require that the embedded fonts are on the RIP, which is a great convenience when files are processed from a range of sources.
Through the use of drivers, files can ripped to PDF and/or PostScript first, and then the low-resolution preview files can be processed for imposition. This has the advantage of allowing pages to be ripped without having to wait for all of the pages of the imposition to be completed. It also allows for last minute changes to individual pages without having to re-rip the entire job.
Imposition Publisher handles a very wide variety of impositions, including BPIF and Stahl imposition schemes. The user can also create and save custom impositions, with as many as 1024 pages per form, and with an unlimited number of files. Any of the impositions can be previewed using Adobe Acrobat.
Some versions of the software use a client-server set-up. In this mode, the high-resolution PostScript files are stored on a server, and the client calls up an imposition scheme from a pre-defined list, or creates and saves a new one. The job files are accessed from the server, and the chosen imposition scheme is applied. Activation of the "print" command brings up a modified print set-up menu that provides control over the printer set-up, including such things as image position and work marks. When the job is complete and has the operator's okay, it is sent to the server where it is queued for output.
Other features include: automatic handling of bleeds; scaling of an imposition to fit a given proofing device; automatic page numbering; inclusion of a large library of standard print marks, including crop marks, color bars, etc., which can be repositioned as needed; the user can create custom print marks and labeling; pages of different size can be placed onto a single sheet; pages can auto-align using a snap-to grid; pages can be backed-up automatically; composite and color-separated files can be processed; and much more. Prices range from $299 for Imposition Publisher Lite, to $9,995 for Imposition Publisher Client Server, all drivers, unlimited users.

Lots O'Logos is a grand collection of over 4000 high-quality vector (EPS) logos, mostly in black-and-white, provided on a single CD-ROM. The files are compatible with almost all illustration and desktop publishing applications.
The collection represents a broad assortment of business and product logotypes covering most categories of commercial enterprise. It is certainly one of the best resources of its kind, and is very reasonably-priced for an image library of this size.
Logos are located using either the Cumulus Browser, which is supplied, or the host operating system navigation system. The user can add color using an illustration program, and resize the logos as needed. An alphabetical listing of all of the logos is available at http://www.lots-o-logos.com/links/alphaindex.html.
The collection is available with the CD-ROM alone ($99), or bundled with a printed catalog of almost 200 pages ($129).

WebCatalog Builder 3.0 (MAC/WIN/UNIX)
WebCatalog Builder 3.0 is an entry-level business solution for e-commerce and dynamic Web publishing. It works in concert with an existing Web server and supports the design and operation of an on-line storefront. The low-cost program includes 250 easy-to-use templates and the capability to produce an unlimited number of storefronts.
Administration of the program is conducted over the Web using the StoreBuilder application and a browser. Items that are added to the store become available on the Web immediately. WebCatalog includes its own high-speed database which can support ODBC and SQL.
Each site visitor is identified with a unique ID number which is used to track their movement through the site and label their electronic shopping cart. The contents of the shopping cart can be processed using a companion program, WebMerchant, when the visitor is ready to make a purchase. WebCatalog can also perform custom calculations for such things as shipping charges and sales tax. A completed invoice can be sent to a customer via e-mail.

VSE Link Tester is a useful Web maintenance tool that validates the relationships between hyperlinks, fixes broken links, and finds missing resources. Broken links are a common occurrence and are often not reported by users. Instead the broken links are usually overlooked or ignored, and either degrade the quality of a site visit, or abruptly end it.
The value of Link Tester is that it can work either on- or off-line, testing multiple Web sites simultaneously. It produces a very useful report that can be used in concert a Web browser and editor to fix problems.
The shareware program is available in two versions. The US Standard version ($19.95) supports one URL and test up to 20 pages per site. The US Business version ($79.95) supports an unlimited number of URLs and an unlimited number of Web pages.

text2graphic Pro 2.0 is a flexible utility that converts a list of text into graphic images that can be used as buttons, and other multimedia elements.
The program is quite simple to use, yet is, nonetheless, powerful in its capability to quickly produce high-quality antialiased graphic images in a themed series. It makes short work, for example, of the process of making a series of buttons for a home page, or a series of titles for a chart.
The user simply types in the list of titles and then sets up to five stored formats that can be applied to the list entries. Format options include shadows, mask, typeface, size, color, and more. The composed text can be applied over either a plain background or an imported picture image.
The procedure to convert text to a graphic begins by typing in or importing text into the Edit Box. As the text is input it can be seen in the selected format, in the preview area. The format information is maintained in the Style Window, where the user can choose from any of the installed system fonts, and control typographic parameters such as tracking, leading, and point size. The user can also apply two shadow levels, with control over shadow color, offset, blur and opacity. The Composition Window contains settings for the background color or image, the border width and color, and other size and positioning options. After the settings have been input, the user has the option of previewing the operative text in any or all of them. If the graphic is to be used as a rollover button, the user can preview the image in the normal, rollover, and clicked states.
After the images have been previewed the user can make changes or accept them as they are. They are output in rendered form in any of the following formats: BMP, JPEG, MacPaint, PSD, PICT, PNG, SGI, TGA, or TIFF. The rendered images are output in numbered sequence and saved in the specified target folder. $69

ACTION Files 1.5.2 is the among the most useful system enhancements available for the Macintosh. With the increasing size of computer hard drives, and the increasing number of stored files; locating, opening, and saving files can be a time-consuming, and even frustrating, task. ACTION Files keeps track of a user's favorite and most recently accessed files and folders, making them accessible in the Open and Save dialog, with just a single click. It eliminates the need to drill through various online volumes, and through multiple folders. The program is a descendent of the popular Now SuperBoomerang. $49.95

GoType! is an accessory keyboard for the Palm Pilot III, VII, and IBM WorkPad series PDAs. It provides a comfortable, silent, full travel keyboard (about the size of a sub-notebook computer keyboard), with a protective folding cover. To use it, the user simply opens the cover, sets-in the Pilot (which connects via its docking port), and begins typing. The unit weighs less than 14 ounces, and measures 10""(w)x4""(d)x1""(h).
The keyboard, which does not require batteries, features six user-defined function keys that can be used to simplify and speed input. The side of the keyboard has an external serial port so that the HotSyncing process can be conducted from the keyboard (without the need for a separate cradle). A HotSync cable is included. This means that whatever is typed into the Pilot can be transferred to a host Macintosh or PC easily.
The keyboard is bundled with TakeNote! word processing and the WordSleuth thesaurus software (valued at $50). An optional Dvorak keyboard layout driver is also provided.

Extension Wizard is a useful utility that can solve a problem that is commonly associated with files that are downloaded from the Internet, and can't be opened. Such files appear with no identifying icon, nor other means of identification. They can be dragged and dropped onto the Extension Wizard application and be converted, automatically, into a form that can be opened by its source application.
Extension Wizard recognizes hundreds of different kinds of documents, ranging from text to compressed sound archives. It is simple to use, and can be customized to suit particular production environments. $19.95

Utility Dog 1.0 is a file search and manipulation utility that is highly efficient at locating files and folders on the basis of very flexible search criteria. Searches are conducted using a Restrictions List, which specifies search text and a location to search, and optionally, a location not to search, a range of file sizes, a kind of file, and various other parameters. The criteria can be very specific, and parameters can be saved for reuse. Unlike conventional search engines, Utility Dog can create a new search list, add to an existing list, remove matches from an given list, or keep all matches on a given list but remove everything else.
The program has powerful viewing capabilities so that most text and image files can be previewed without the need for their source applications. Users can select given files from the Finder and view them in Utility Dog. Entire folders can viewed automatically, with a user-specified delay. Users can list an impressive amount of information about each file, including its creation date, kind, type, creator, comments, location, and 14 other column headings.
In addition to finding files, Utility Dog can process them in a batch, performing such processes as copy, move, trash, label, alias, rename, and many more. The file management capabilities extend to the realm of backup and restore, including folder synchronization, and complex backup of specific files and folders.
In addition to an exceptionally flexible search capability, the program can Find Duplicates and also Compare Folders, to find similarities and/or differences between two folders. Found files can also be revealed in the Finder, so that they can be acted upon directly. Any given file can be identified according to its creator. The "Reveal Creator" command is used to interact directly with the application that created the currently selected document.

Pocket Quicken is a companion application for Quicken 99 or 2000 that facilitates the mobile collection of expense information. The app incorporates two of Quicken's fast data entry shortcuts: QuickFill and Memorized transactions, which make it possible to enter a transaction with only two strokes of the stylus.
Information that is recorded in the Palm, IBM, TRG or Handspring connected organizer can be transferred to a Macintosh or PC host computer using HotSync (R) technology. Once the data has been transferred to the main Quicken program it is automatically categorized and account details are tallied. $39.95

EndNote 4.0 adds over 30 new bibliographic features that support the creation of custom-formatted entries in more than 500 pre-defined styles. Billed as "the world's most popular bibliographic software," with over 250,000 copies sold, EndNote 4 introduces a new user interface along with an expanded degree of user customization. The program incorporates several improvements that address more efficient management of references. As in previous versions, the program integrates online searching, reference database management, and bibliography-making in a single program.
One of the chief new features is the capability to customize references so that only selected information fields are displayed. The entries can be sorted simply by clicking on the column headings, and the references can be previewed in any of hundreds of different bibliographic styles directly in the library window. Digital publishers will appreciate the fact that formatted bibilographies can be generated directly in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect. Documents can be revised as needed, with all in-text citations and bibliography updated automatically. $299

Conversions Plus Suite is a combination of programs that facilitate the use of Macintosh files on a PC. At the heart of the suite is the Conversions Plus 5.0 (CP 5) application which supports the opening of virtually any Windows, Macintosh or unreadable e-mail attachment. The program is fashioned after MacLinkPlus for Macintosh, which makes it possible for Macintosh users to open a wide variety of PC files. CP 5 provides the Windows user with the option to convert a Macintosh file to a format that is supported on the host machine, so that it can be opened and processed. Converters are provided for word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphic files. The program is capable of automatically sensing the file type of the source file and selecting the appropriate new format. Files can be viewed within CP 5 without the need to open the program that created them.
The program maintains the formatting information that is an essential element of most word processing documents, including style (bold, italics, etc.), headers, footers, style sheets, and embedded graphics. Multiple files can be converted simultaneously.
The suite also includes Attachment Opener which can open and retrieve the contents of otherwise unreadable e-mail attachments. The program can process "garbage text" at the end of an e-mail message, fix attachments with the wrong file extension, and open compressed or encoded files.
MacOpener, another part of the suite, makes it possible for the host PC to read and write Macintosh disks directly. This includes Macinosh formatted Zip, Jaz, SyQuest and CD-ROMs. $99.95

Data Rescue is a utility that can recover lost Macintosh volumes, including files and folders from crashed hard drives, and removable media. The recovered data is saved to another volume so that the damaged original is not used in the process.
The program has been favorably compared to other data restoration processes, and claims to do a better job of recovery, restoring icons, dates and folder hierarchy. It was awarded the MacFixIt 1998 Toolbox Award based on highly favorable user feedback.
The program works by searching for catalog fragments. If the catalog can be restored it can be used to determine valuable file information, such as size, type, hierarchy and disk location.
The operation of the program is quite simple. The user selects the volume to recover and Data Rescue searches it for catalog fragments. It reports on the files that it has found. The user selects the files and folders that are to be recovered. The selected data is saved to a destination device. $39

WhiteboardPhoto compares favorably to electronic copy boards costing hundreds to thousands of dollars more. It can capture everything that is written, and at anytime during a meeting or presentation; it requires no special set-up, and can be used inconspicuously; it can be used in virtually any setting; and it records in full-color.
The WhiteboardPhoto software incorporates special algorithms which improve digital images by optimizing the white background and enhancing the marker colors. It also automatically corrects for perspective and any lens distortion that is inherent in the camera. The software also provides the capability to rotate, correct keystone, control brightness, convert line-art, and batch convert multiple images. The program supports all of the file formats supported by QuickTime 4, which is an impressive number and variety. The various multimedia elements are affected by behaviors that are applied from the program's Control Panel. The Control Panel commands influence properties related to navigation (such as transitions), sprites (their activation, display, and movement), display (timing and behavior of media elements), animations (when it will start and how it will be controlled), virtual reality (control over nodes, angles and zooms), audio (volume specification and play controls), movement (definition of the media object motion), and programming (generation of scripts that initiate various actions).

Amapi 3D v5 provides a flexible and natural modeling environment for the creation of complex and sophisticated geometric surfaces. The program supports advanced tools, including NURBS, polygonal curves and Gordon surfaces, and the interface can be customized to fit the individual needs of the user.
An Amapi model is constructed in a workspace that consists of a workbench positioned over a grid. Models are constructed on the workbench, in basic wireframe mode, and the grid serves as a point of reference. Various shaded modes can be applied to produce increased realism, and to make manipulations more interactive and productive. The user can see the object(s) from various angles by displaying an unlimited number of viewer windows.
The user works from three main tool palettes: Construction (which includes primitive shape tools), Modeling (which includes tools to edit and modify), and Assembly (which includes tools to position and orient). These palettes mirror the 3D object construction sequence which is to build, to model and to assemble. Live Stage Professional Version 2.01 is described by its publisher as "...the only complete cross-platform scripting controlled QuickTime 4 authoring environment for producing interactive QuickTime movies for the Internet." It is also appropriate for developing rich media presentations for delivery on CD/DVD-ROM. The construction of a Live Stage production is based on a timeline interface which presents users with a chronological picture of all tracks and media elements. Clicking on a track or sample results in the display of an editing window where the track or sample can be edited. Microspot Media Assistant (WIN )
Microspot Media Assistant is a simple-to-use, inexpensive digital asset management system that supports the storage, viewing, and retrieval of virtually any type of file format, including TIFF, PICT, JPG, Photoshop, HTML, Word, and others.
Users import files in one of four ways: they use the Floating Drop Box which sits on the user's desktop; they drag files into the open Media Assistant window; they select the File>Add File... menu option; or, to add an entire folder, they select the File>Add Folder... menu option. Files can be stored in any number of catalogs. Files can be retrieved as simply as dragging them out of the Media Assistant window and into the target application. Flexible searches can be conducted in six different ways using six different parameters.

N2MP3 is an MP3 encoder incorporating the Proteron MPEG encoder for MPEG1 layer III format. "The algorithm is a variation of the psycho acoustic model and supports variable bitrate (VBR) with minimum bitrate specification and full support for joint stereo encoding."
The value of MP3, of course, is that it is a highly efficient compression format, producing a full minute of CD-quality (44.1 KHz, 16-bit stereo) audio in a single megabyte. While a standard audio CD can hold a total of 74 minutes of music, an MP3 encoded CD could hold more than ten hours of music.
N2MP3 is elegantly simple. Once it is installed, and the user has placed a music CD in their drive, he or she simply drags an audio track from the CD to any folder on the hard drive. The track is automatically encoded into MP3 format. As the conversion takes place the N2MP3 Progress Meter appears in the encoding window showing information about the active file. Since the conversion takes place in realtime, the user can optionally select the Play Audio option and hear the song as it is being converted.
The user maintains a considerable degree of control over the encoding process. This includes such settings as Bitrate, Encoder (Faster or Better Quality), and default player. A particularly useful feature is the program's capability to seek information about the active CD from Escient's CD database and store it along with the encoded file. This information includes CD titles, artists, and track names. The user also has the option of entering such information manually. Certain players can use and display this information. $34.95

GATF Imaging Skills Training Curriculum (MAC)
The GATF Imaging Skills Training Curriculum is a fully-developed instructional package addressing the professional growth and development needs of students, and staff members of prepress departments. Professionals occupying such positions as designer, desktop publisher, preflight and output specialist, scanner operator, customer service representative, sales representative, digital press operator, and prepress manager can benefit.
The curriculum was developed in response to a survey conducted by GATF which found that prepress training yielded the most impressive benefits as compared to other categories of training, such as press and customer service. In regard to prepress training, the most popular training methodologies were found to be on-the-job training and vendor training.
The GATF curriculum is also adaptable for use in college courses. Its flexible design can be applied to full semester courses as well as facility-based training sessions. Idea Keeper 2.08 is a utility program that provides the means to save just about any kind of information, including outlines, linked documents, clippings, and URLs. It is, in essence, a free-form database and idea manager, which incorporates a basic outline function. Its main purpose is to store and manage the multitude of facts, ideas, and thoughts that don't fit into any standard format, but are a part of everyday life.
The main part of the program is the Organizer Window which shows a listing of topics on the left and ideas associated with the selected topic on the right. When an idea is double-clicked its full contents are displayed in a word processing window. The information is, then, organized from the general to the specific.
The stored information can be formatted using styles; and favorite style settings, combining typeface, point size, and type style, can be saved as templates. The user also has access to word processing options, such as adjustable linespacing, alignment, and margins. Of particular usefulness is the inclusion of inline pictures, sounds, and checkboxes. Checkboxes can be selected to indicate an on or off state, and can be associated with "alarm objects" that can be set to present an alert at a prescribed date and time, provided that the program is active.
Ideas, or trigger words within them, can be used to link to other files using file references, or alias. This means that virtually any kind of file, such as an InDesign document, can be linked. A user can embed URLs for the Web, mail or FTP which are live links, and when selected, open the appropriate helper application.
Ideas enter the system either by typing them in directly, copying them from other sources and pasting, or importing text files. An entire folder of text files can be imported as a batch, with each file recognized as a separate idea. While using another application, and provided that Idea Keeper is open, the user can employ a keystroke combination to capture the current Clipboard contents, or enter it into a floating Idea Keeper palette. Pictures and Palm database files can also be imported.
Information is retrieved in a variety of ways, including the use of keywords, text searches, or hypertext. Hypertext links are established in the Organizer Window, simply by dragging one idea listing to another.
Text can be exported for processing in a text or word processor, or shared in part or total with others by producing a read-only stand-alone application. The program is provided as shareware. $30
