The process of producing special effects typography often involves the addition of graphic elements, artwork, and line and shape detail that require considerable design expertise and skill. Although all bitmap and vector programs have the innate capability to produce typographic effects, they may not incorporate the range of capabilities that are particular to custom typographic composition. Their shortcomings make them dependent upon the use of supplemental programs that do have such specialized features. The synthesis of a design can involve a multitude of programs, each dependent upon the import and export capabilities of the software in use, to allow for the progressive development of a complex design.
Just as in machine typesetting, wherein specialized devices were invented to meet the precise requirements of the output form, so too in software have programs been created to address particular typographic production demands. Of particular note is TypeStyler 3, an especially capable application, with well over a decade of use by a large population of professional and novice users.
TypeStyler 3 is a Macintosh application that can produce professional quality display typography for print, Web, and video graphics. Within its easy-to-use WYSIWYG design environment, the user can produce truly dazzling typographic effects. The program works seamlessly with a wide range of drawing, painting, page layout, and design applications.
The user can manipulate any of their PostScript Type 1 or TrueType typefaces, as well as the included library of 110 Bitstream fonts, which are provided in both PostScript and TrueType formats.
The variety of typographic treatments is virtually infinite, and extends to total typographic control over a range of effects encompassing twisting, bending, reshaping, combining, embossing, overlapping, blurring, dimensioning, rotating, curving, shadowing, texturing, coloring, and much more. The key to the program's flexibility is the fact that type is manipulated as objects, which means that characters can break free from the relatively static forms of straight typographic composition.
Within the object-based environment, type can be converted into outlines, and be manipulated as independent shapes. The user gains the capability to access the actual outlines created by the type designer, and edit them at will. Control points can be added or removed, and each point can be moved anywhere.
TypeStyler 3 supports the importation of files that have been created in other programs, so that they can be combined in a specific design, or so that images, for example, can be used to fill a character or word, or be added to the program's image library. In addition to the creation of custom type, the program supports the creation of graphic shapes, called ""panels."" A panel is a graphic primitive, such as a star or rectangle, that can undergo any of the design treatments that are available for text.
What is especially useful is the fact that designs are composed of objects, and the features of each object can be changed at will, at almost any time.* This makes it very easy to make many variations of a single composition. $149.95

*An exception is type that has been converted into outlines. In this state the type can no longer be edited as alpha characters.

RagTime 5 is a professional business publishing suite that supports text, spreadsheets, images, and graphs. Its calculation and graphing capabilities make it especially well-suited to the production of catalogs, price lists, and annual reports.
RagTime uses a layout scheme that is different from most others. The spreadsheet interface can be used to divide a page into any combination of rows and columns, and any page element can be placed in any cell. The contents of a cell can be replicated in any number of cells, a useful capability for ganging work, such as business cards. Any changes made to the source cell is reflected automatically in the related cells.
The program has several variable data capabilities, making it possible to produce customized mail merge documents that are built in a spreadsheet layout. These documents can be as simple as personalized letters, and as complex as customized product specification sheets.
The RagTime spreadsheet incorporates typographic features, such as paragraph and font style sheets; and calculation features, such as importation of Excel tables and the use of over 200 calculation and evaluation functions. The templates made from RagTime spreadsheets can include dynamic links that create what are termed "living" documents. A living document will respond to the input of new numeric data, reflecting new calculations in associated charts.
Other features include: Footnotes, tables of contents, indices, and drop caps; grid lines, baseline grids, variable units of measurement and rulers; small caps and kerning; 3D spreadsheet with 16,000 rows, columns and planes, unlimited spreadsheets per document; color management with over 30 MB of ICC-compliant color quality profiles; tear-off palettes and menus; extensive drag-and-drop support; and much more. $695

Genuine Fractals Print Pro 1.0.7 is a Photoshop plug-in that provides users with the capability to scan an image once, and then output that image in any resolution that they need. The program makes it possible for a user to scale a scanned image at up to 100+ times its original size without any discernable loss of quality.
The program encodes and renders files in RGB, CMYK, CIE-Lab,Multichannel (up to 16 channels) and grayscale color spaces. It produces "resolution on demand," affording the user the option to scan at any resolution and render subsequent generations at any resolution. A modest-sized scanned image is easier to manipulate, smaller to store, faster to transmit, and generally more manageable.
The program supports two types of encoding. Lossless encoding provides a compression ratio of 2:1, and renders the image in exact fidelity at 100%. Near Lossless encoding provides a compression ratio of 5:1, and still maintains excellent quality levels at 100 percent and beyond.
The advantages of the program are many, and are realized in the fact that an image can be captured and manipulated at a modest size, and then output at a larger size. This can be invaluable, since customers often don't know what final size they will need for a given project; or an image may need to be repurposed, in a larger size. Ordinarily, enlarging an image either enlarges the size of the individual pixels, or averages the size of neighboring pixels. In either case, the image becomes larger, but less sharp. The Genuine Fractals encoding method is pixel-free. Scaling fractals generates new pixels maintaining sharpness, regardless of the scale. The resulting image is more compact, and one that can be scaled far beyond what is reasonable with pixel-based imaging. $299

*Transform. Transforms can be executed to create a minimum line thickness so that hairlines will print on hires devices; pages can be scaled or free-rotated to any angle; and pages can be mirrored for output to film, or for fabric transfers.
*Fields. Form fields can be combined so that they can not be modified or lost.
*Info. Font information is provided that indicates the exact font name, and whether it is embedded and/or subsetted. Information can be displayed about text and images within the PDF file. Image information shows exact dimensions, compression method, DPI, and more. Individual images can be shrunk or recompressed. $205

Macromedia Flash 4. Flash was introduced in 1996 as the FutureSplash Animator, produced by FutureWave Software. It was acquired by Macromedia shortly after its introduction, and was renamed ""Flash.""
Flash has become a standard vector-based file format (.swf) for the delivery of compact graphics and animations that incorporate sound, music, and interactivity. The Flash player is ubiquitous, and is an open Internet binary standard that has become an integral part of most Web browsers and computer operating systems.
According to an NPD Online Research survey conducted in June, 1999, there are an estimated 140 million Web users (approximately 83% of the total population) who can view Flash content without the need to download a special player. This means that developers can safely produce and publish Flash-enabled sites without great concern that visitors will be able to view them as intended. In addition, Flash offers a variety of alternate file format export options, including Animated GIF, which can be read by virtually all Web browsers.
Flash files have the capability to stream, meaning that they begin to play, and continue to play, as they are being downloaded. This level of immediacy means that the user does not need to wait for the entire file to be downloaded before seeing it. It also means that even full screen animations are fast, since Flash animations consist of vector data, which is inherently compact, containing the mathematical descriptions of shapes, rather than the larger bitmap descriptions that would otherwise be used to form them. Flash is more efficient than the standard Internet bitmap file formats, GIF and JPEG, both in the relative amount of information it can convey, and the speed at which it does so.
Flash files are created in the Flash program, which consists of a stage (visual editor), a timeline, and associated tools, menus and palettes. The user produces or imports shapes, and then adds animation effects. No programming is required.
A Flash animation, which may be as simple as moving a ball from one side of the screen to another, can be accomplished with a minimum number of steps. It is created by drawing the shape on the left of the stage, copying it, moving the indicator in the timeline, pasting the shape on the right side of the stage, and then letting the program produce the intermediate frames automatically (tweening). In addition to movement, any of the object's properties, such as its size, rotation, tint and transparency, can be tweened. The timeline also supports multiple layers, and provides the capability to control when elements on each layer will appear, and for how long they will stay visible. The user can also produce animations by creating them frame-by-frame.
Flash content can come from a wide variety of places. Adobe Illustrator can export Flash vector files directly using the free Flash Writer plug-in. Flash itself can import bitmaps, trace them, and convert them into vector shapes, or use them as placed images. $299

Norton Utilities for Macintosh 5.0 is the latest version of this truly essential system utility. This new version is both PowerPC native and supportive of the HFS+ file system.
A key improvement in this version is Live Repair, which enables the Macintosh start-up disk to easily and safely repair itself. Because Norton Disk Doctor repairs can be initiated from disk rather than the bootable CD, the program can be updated (LiveUpdate) by an automatic connection to the Symantec server, via the Internet. The CD is only needed on those occasions when the computer will not recognize the hard disk. The Main Interface now includes an entry for Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh.
Another new feature is Undo, which lets the user back out of any changes made to a disk if, under unusual circumstances, it becomes necessary to return to a previous state.
The UnErase utility, which enables users to retrieve files that are accidentally deleted, has been improved to support all file types. The utility can restore both files and folders, and lets the user set filters to quickly find the exact files needing recovery.
Other features include support for FireWire at the device-level, and an enhanced FileSaver utility, which now decouples volume updates and file tracking capabilities;

Norton Antivirus for Macintosh 6.0 is the newest way to protect the Macintosh from viruses that can enter via Web browsers, online services, e-mail, networks, floppy disks, and CD-ROMs. According to the National Computer Security Association (NCSA) virus infections are now 20 times more likely to occur than just two years ago. The program uses Symantec's next-generation Bloodhound heuristic technology to automatically detect and remove known and unknown viruses.
Version 6.0 is 20% faster, both in initial and subsequent virus scans. It can be configured to scan archived files last, so that the most likely files are examined first.
The program remains current using an enhanced LiveUpdate utility, which automatically detects an Internet connection and links to a Symantec server, via FTP, and downloads and installs the latest virus definition and software updates. This capability is particularly important since new viruses appear on an all too frequent basis.
The Bootable CD can be used to start-up if the hard drive fails due to a virus. The program can eliminate the virus and repair the damage. Most compressed files can be scanned for viruses, and the program is "installation aware," suspending alerts during this operation. Virus settings can be password-protected so that they can not be changed. $69.95

DragStrip 3.7 is a very useful desktop organizer that provides access to all frequently-used applications, folders, documents, URLs, and other digital resources in one convenient place. Users can organize programs and other digital elements by their type, such as Application, Utility, Internet, etc., by project, or by whatever system of categorization that makes sense to them. Each entry in a DragStrip window is a file alias, a pointer which indicates the location of the actual file or resource. A single file can be represented in an unlimited number of DragStrip sets.
The large size of disk drives, in the multi-gigabytes, makes it very important to have the means to quickly find and launch applications, and locate and open application files and other resources. DragStrip provides this capability, allowing the user to create tab-accessible strips displayed in a variety of different presentations, with access to any resource available with a single click. We have been DragStrip users since it first appeared, and would not be without it. $20

FinderKeeper is a system extension and control panel that work together to help the user organize their desktop. It works by efficiently stacking windows as they are opened, or moved to the desktop. There are four preset locations which serve as starting points from which each disk's windows will cascade. The cascaded windows make it possible to read the name of each window, select it independently, and see its relationship to both the folder it is in, and the folders it contains. The idea is simple, but the effect is significant, in that it eliminates desktop clutter. $17

Snapz Pro 2 is a major upgrade to the popular Snapz Pro screen capture utility. This new version is capable of capturing virtually anything that appears on a Macintosh screen, either as a QuickTime movie or a still image. For this reason it is likely to be the tool of choice for software manual publishers and others who have a need to document the images that appear on-screen.
New to the program is the capability to record QuickTime movies of any screen activity, with realtime narration, and save it in a compact file format. The movies are excellent for training videos and similar types of multimedia presentations. The reasonable file sizes make the movies likely candidates for Web delivery. All the user needs to do is invoke Snapz Pro 2, set the recording options, then conduct the recording session. The session is ended by invoking Snapz Pro 2 a second time and saving the file.
Still images can be saved in the widest variety of screen capture formats available. These include GIF, JPEG, PICT, PNG, and TIFF.
A screen capture session is initiated with a single key. The user has the option to select from four tools, which provide the capability to capture the exact portion of the screen that the user needs. The target screen area may be the entire monitor, a window, a menu, or another defined area.
The program is believed to be the most versatile and capable Macintosh screen capture utility available. It is the only utility of its kind that can capture game screens that use Apple's InputSproket. It also works with Windows emulators, making it a solution for capturing still and moving images in Windows as well. $40

Font Reserve 2.0 is the second generation of the program considered to be "best in class" in the category of font management. This version provides several important new features and improvements, including: workflow automation through the use of AppleScript, an 800% speed increase in font activation, and a flexible and highly useful specimen sheet printing capability which supports the generation of professional quality type specimen books.
Font Reserve uses a unique database-driven process to manage fonts using an intuitive Macintosh Finder-like graphical user interface. The program addresses literally all font management-related issues including project sets, activation and deactivation of one or many fonts, use of customers' fonts, font usage by a service bureau, and network access. Font Reserve can automatically find all available fonts; check them for duplication and corruption; and organize them on the basis of all important criteria, such as name, ID, foundry, classification, version, location, and more. The management of a large collection of fonts has never been easier.
The program includes a free QuarkXTension that automatically opens all job-related fonts and embedded graphic files when a job is opened. $119.95

StuffIt Deluxe 5.1 is the latest version of the standard in Macintosh file compression. This version produced files that are up to 20% smaller, producing files that are "stuffed," on average, at a rate of about 60% of original size. Smaller files require less space to store, and less time to transmit.
The program incorporates a variety of codecs supporting Mac, PC, and Unix formats (.zip, .tar, .hqx, and several more). The program can produce self-extracting archives (.sea) that incorporate a built-in decompressor, relying on no external application to decompress. Other features include: the capability to segment a large file into smaller segments that will fit on multiple pieces of removable media; use of passwords; automatic processing of files downloaded from the Internet; and more. The SpaceSaver compression utility provides transparent compression of files and folders to save diskspace. The files are automatically decompressed when they are opened. Free UnStuffIt utilities are available for Macintosh and Windows. $79.95

Face Factory is an innovative program that enables users to create, animate and manipulate photo-realistic 3-D heads from just two still photographs.
The program's "Head Station" area is used to input two face images, one a front view, the other a side view, from a digital camera, file or scanner. The program is able to create a 3-D model of a complete head that can be rotated, enlarged or viewed from any angle.
The three-dimensional head is created by joining the photos on the side of the head, and placing them over a wireframe. The user can fine tune the model by providing "hints," which help to define the exact location of the ears and nose. A photo "skin" is attached to the wireframe, and it can be bent and stretched when a special effect is applied.
In the "Effects Station" part of the program the user can apply 30 distortion effects that can produce a variety of amusing effects, such as "Cube" and "Alien." These transformations can be saved as an AVI video file.
Other features include: sending 3-D heads with text messages as e-mail; saving a 3-D head as a screensaver; and importing 3-D heads into virtually any program that can accept a standard graphic file format. $39.95

PhotoImpact 5 is a complete Web image editing tool that incorporates both raster- and vector-based imaging.
New to this version are several special effects, including "Lightening Effects." With this new feature, users can produce realistic lightning, fireworks, halo, spotlight, meteor, comet and laser effects, in still and animated form, for use on and off the Web.
Also new is an interface to draw shapes, lines, arrows and outline forms. These objects can be rendered in flat 2D, or in 3D raised shapes. The refined Text Tool gives users the capability to create editable vector-based 2D and 3D text with control over material and deformation, as well as the capability to wrap and curve text around objects. Also included are advanced masking; snap-to lasso selections; painting with paper textures; and cloning and painting with transparency.
The program's emphasis on Web graphic creation has been enhanced in several ways. The new "Component Designer" makes creating any Web graphic a simple three-step process. The user can begin with the 1000 templates of Web graphical objects, containing buttons, banners, bullets, icons, and more. The user selects a component and customizes it directly to PhotoImpact or to the Image Optimizer. The improved Image Optimizer makes it even easier to shrink file sizes, using Ulead's proprietary SmartSaver image compression technology.
Other features include: a JavaScript Rollover Assistant; Image Slicing tools; GIF Animator 3; an advanced button designer; background designer; image map tag creator; HTML assistant; and more. $79.95
