There are several trends and developments in the field of digital publishing that are highly likely to impact on how work is produced, and on what new skills will be needed. The following remarks are drawn from a publication available at http://htc.rit.edu/publication.html which presents some of those trends and developments, and the Web resources that may be helpful in tracking them, understanding them, and acquiring them.
Trends are, by their nature, changing and developing. The following brief descriptions are meant as a starting point for raising awareness of the technologies that are influencing the way that we publish information.
1. Adobe Acrobat PDF: Both a major technical development and a key element in digital publishing workflow.
It has become apparent that many companies are routinely using the Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF) to maintain jobs through most or all of the production cycle. PDF has several advantages over PostScript files, including on-screen previewing and smaller file size. In addition, PDF files tend to be more reliable than their PostScript versions. Printers and imagesetters are available that will accept PDF files directly. PDF files are a reasonable alternative to conventional printing on paper.

2. Digital Workflows: Digital media require digital production processes. The strong push of Computer-to-Plate and Computer-to-Press technologies, has led to the need to find efficient and effective methods to keep all production elements in digital form, and process them in a logical sequence. The file format of choice for this purpose is PDF.

3. Media Asset Management Systems: Efficient digital publishing requires the accurate tracking of all electronically held elements. The use of digital workflows requires that all of the parts of a job are maintained in a digital form. The proliferation of digital assets requires a system that can quickly and easily allow users to store and retrieve any part of a job: photos, fonts, artwork, and application files. Several media asset management programs are now available from companies such as MediaWay and Canto. An inexpensive media asset management program called Portfolio is available from Extensis, and a Macintosh shareware tool called iView is available from Script Software.

4. XML: The Web is developing as a richer more capable publishing platform. XML is the latest extension to HTML, the language of the World Wide Web. XML is based on SGML, the most complete, yet complex, mark-up language available. The addition of XML will provide Web authors with an unprecedented degree of flexibility in creating Web sites.

5. Growth of the Internet: It is nothing less than a phenomenon. The Internet has been accepted as an alternative publishing format, supporting, and in some cases, replacing, print. This development has been fueled by the unprecedented increase in Internet use, accounting for more than 9 million daily World Wide Web users in the U.S. as of October 1996. (1)
The presence of the Web is seen everywhere; including the traditional forms of mass communication: radio, television and print. For example, of the first 20 advertisements in the October 96 issue of Scientific American, 75% listed WWW addresses, even more than those which listed toll-free numbers (70%).(2) In terms of its effectiveness as an advertising, sales, and information delivery channel, the Web has produced phenomenal sales growth. The dollar volume of sales generated by the WWW in 1995 was estimated at $436 million, with an expected increase in 1998 to $46 billion.(3)
No other form of communication has generated such exceptional growth. As of the beginning of 1997, the approximate number of new Internet domain names being registered monthly was 85,000.(4) And, just as impressive, the monthly increase in Internet traffic is estimated to grow by 30% according to MCI.(5)

We may not know where it is all going, but we do know where it has come from. Web Publishing is intimately linked with print publishing.
Electronic prepress has been the primary source for technical expertise in the development of professionally-produced Web sites. This is due to several factors:
o The skill set required to build Web pages is similar to that required for electronic prepress. The people who have demonstrated abilities to produce well-designed print pages have migrated easily to producing well-designed Web pages.
o The existing archive of print pages is the content source from which many Web pages are derived.
o The structure of HTML, the code-based language of the Web, is similar in many respects to the code-sets used in the typesetting systems which predate desktop publishing. This has eased the acceptance of HTML in prepress environments where code-based systems are generally accepted without intimidation.
o Traditional desktop publishing tools have been enhanced with Web publishing capabilities. For example...
--Adobe has added several features to PageMaker 6.5 which provide for converting printed page formats into screen page formats, and for generating output in HTML.
--Third parties have developed Xtensions for QuarkXPress which support expressing Quark files in HTML.
--Adobe has added import and export filters to support the main graphic formats of the Web: GIF and JPEG.
o Leading graphic arts companies, such as R. R. Donnelley and Banta, have become the models for cross-media publishing. These companies have successfully built full-line businesses extending from print to interactive multimedia, hybrid publications (print/CD, print/CD/Web, CD/Web), and the Web.

When electronic commerce was first explored in the early years of the web, it was often a very static experience that offered no real advantages over normal catalog shopping. Today, companies like Dell do millions of dollars in sales over the web and many customers find the Internet shopping experience truly compelling.
Amazon.com is an Internet success story. Boasting itself as the world's largest bookstore, Amazon has 100 times more books than the average mall bookstore and can deliver most books within a few days. If the sheer number of books offered were Amazon's only advantage, however, it would be no different from ordering from a warehouse. A look at the Amazon web site reveals why this site is so compelling.
When I shop at Amazon, which I've been doing rather frequently lately, it seems fundamentally different from shopping at a bookstore. To me, bookstores are uncomfortable places. They're quiet and rigidly organized. If you know what you're looking for, you will probably find it eventually. But except for occassional serendipidous experiences, you rarely find something completely random that interests you anyway. Amazon greatly enhances the chances of a serendipidous event. When the user examines an entry for a book, the site lists other books purchased by people who bought this book. The given titles would be unlikely to appear next to each other on a store shelf but may lead the user down an unexplored path and eventually to an interesting book.
The feature that brings me back to Amazon often is the Recommendation Center. This area features several techniques that share the goal of recommending books to the visitor. The theory seems to be that people don't always know about books that they would really like. This was certainly the case for me. I answered some questions about how I liked certain books and was given a list of suggested titles. Clicking on a title gave me a description as well as reviews written by other Amazon customers. A few clicks later, the books were charged to my credit card and on their way to me.
I believe that Amazon shows the potential of the web as a sales channel. The site is so flexible and well-organized that there is a clear advantage over a traditional bookstore. This is a great example of online commerce done right. We have even begun adding links from our book reviews to Amazon.com entries. Just click on the link for additional perspectives, related titles, or to purchase the book.
Vertigo 3D Words is a plug-in for Adobe Illustrator that provides a complete, yet easy-to-use environment for creating professional 3D text. Once within the program, the user simply types the text, selects a font (TrueType or Type 1), selects a color, moves or rotates the text along the 3D path, positions the camera, and then places the text within Illustrator. Timbuktu is one of those special programs that earns the loyalty of its users. It quickly becomes an essential part of the way that you use your computer...and the means by which you extend your reach to all of your computing resources.
Timbuktu Pro 4.0 for Macintosh is the latest version of this tried and true program. It provides complete remote control over another computer (Mac or Windows PC) running Timbuktu, through direct dial-up, ARA, Internet, LAN or WAN connections. The user can control the remote computer (with the proper permission) and do virtually anything that can be done locally. In addition, files can be transferred in either direction; and a communication session, either as a chat or voice intercom, can be conducted.
The capability to control a remote computer is as useful as it is compelling. A user can control the computer in their office, while working at home, or on business in a distant city; take control of a colleague's computer and demonstrate new software; install software updates to a cluster of computers in a laboratory; troubleshoot a network problem; collaborate on a project in real-time; perform system maintenance tasks; provide remote training; and much more.
Version 4.0 adds several impressive features to this excellent program. Among them are an Intercom for voice communication; automatic file synchronization; significantly increased file transfer speeds using Timbuktu Express technology; recording and playback of Timbuktu operations using AppleScript; and a new and improved AppleGuide.

Photoshop 4.0 Vol. 6 (MAC/WIN)
Photoshop 4.0 Video, Volume 6, Advanced Layer Techniques, is part of a ten volume set which is also available in CD-ROM format. Each of the tapes provides an in-depth treatment of one particular aspect of Photoshop use, such as retouching and filters. This particular tape provides an excellent overview of the use of layers, masks, and clipping groups. The instruction is clear and fast-paced, and a running clock, which appears on the screen, makes it easy to return to any particular part for review. $59 per volume, $490 for all ten volumes.

PageMaker 6.5 Interactive CD-ROM Training (MAC/WIN)
The PageMaker 6.5 Interactive Training CD-ROM set consists of six volumes, covering virtually every technical aspect of the program. Each CD has an interactive interface, showing the content, and providing various navigational aids for finding the information of interest. The program tracks the user's progress, presenting a graphic map of which units have been completed. The CD mirrors its videotape counterpart, but has the advantage of greater user control and a clearer display of the computer screens. $59 per volume, or all six for $294.

Scripter 2 (MAC)
AppleScript is Apple's language for communicating instructions between software applications for the purpose of controlling and automating work. Publishing professionals have used AppleScript to implement digital workflow paths which were never imagined by software vendors, and which would be prohibitively expensive to develop with custom software. AppleScript uses a fairly simple set of commands to "teach" one program to accept information from, or pass information to, another. Despite the elegance of the language, and its compelling value to users, it is not intuitive; and the applications it supports consist of vocabularies of hundreds of words (commands).
The only available solution for composing AppleScript efficiently is Scripter 2. Scripter 2 is an authoring, debugging and development environment for the over 150 applications that are AppleScriptable. It speeds the development of scripts by providing powerful editing functions, easy access to application vocabularies, construction shortcuts, and debugging assistants.
Scripter provides instant access to the commands and object classes that are associated with a particular application. This occurs when the application is added to the Scripter Application Bar, which displays all of the verbs and objects so that the user can easily construct scripts. The App Bar supports up to eight simultaneous applications. Scripts are assembled by clicking on commands and parameters, and the Builder environment clearly shows all of the AppleScript grammar.
Completed scripts can be debugged easily. The Observe window shows exactly how the script is running, line-by-line. The user can step through a script one command at a time, and make corrections in real-time.
AppleScript will be part of the forthcoming Rhapody OS, confirming Apple's commitment to this important technology. Power users and other serious publishing application users would do well to learn AppleScript programming and employ Scripter in the process. $199

FileMaker Pro 4.0 (MAC/WIN)
FileMaker Pro is one of the most popular database applications in use today. This publication (KDP) is composed and maintained in FileMaker, and reports are output for posting on the Web. With FileMaker Pro 4.0 that process is simplified with built-in HTTP and CGI capabilities which are so seamlessly implemented that virtually anyone can publish their databases to the Web.
Web publishing is engaged through the Web Companion plug-in which creates a Java-enabled interface. A user can elect to publish a database for public or private use. The implications of this capability are far-reaching, and make it possible for an individual to make their personal databases accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world through any Web browser. A publisher could make their publications live, or a businessperson could have 24-hour, worldwide access to their databases. Consider the possibilities.
FileMaker now supports both GIF and JPEG images, which are the standard file formats of the Web. In addition, PICT versions of graphics can be maintained if the "Store Compatible Graphics" option is selected. If only PICT versions are in the database, GIF or JPEG versions are converted "on-the-fly" for Web posting.
New too is a feature to send email from within FileMaker. Fields within the database can be assigned to the "To" or "CC" fields, making it possible to execute the bulk mailing of electronic messages. Another direct Web link is the option of setting fields to open specified URLs with a single click.
Claris has devised a new language, CDML (Claris Dynamic Markup Language) to provide Web authors with the means to customize Web interfaces to support FileMaker databases. CDML extends the capabilities of HTML. The forthcoming version 3.0 of Claris Home Page (to ship in December) will include a built-in FileMaker Connection Assistant to provide an easy path to integrating a FileMaker database within Web pages.
FileMaker 4.0 is not just about Web integration, although that is certainly its main feature, and justifies the whole number increment in the version upgrade. Another major improvement is the drag and drop importation of Excel spreadsheets, converting them directly into FileMaker databases. This is also a path to taking spreadsheets directly to the Web.
Upgrades from version 3 are $99. Files from version 3 open in version 4 with no conversion necessary, and version 4 files will open in version 3, although features which are unique to version 4, such as rotated fields, will revert to version 3 status. MagicMask (MAC/WIN)
MagicMask is a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and compatible applications which simplifies the creation of complex masks. It provides capabilities which were previously available only in high-end electronic prepress systems. Among its tools is the unique Magic Lasso which automatically detects the edge of an object as the user clicks around it. The tool is amazing, and is representative of the collection of tools which comprises this precision plug-in.
The plug-in is based on patented ImageGenetics technology, which, in essence can intelligently detect elements of an image, and therefore require significantly less skilled guidance by the user. As an example, the Color Brush lets the user select one or multiple objects or backgrounds by brushing over them. By so doing selective color ranges can be masked out, or in, with precision and ease, and with unlimited levels of undo. In addition, the Density Mask tool, which incorporates an adjustable "reach" control, makes it easy to select gradients, such as skin tones.
MagicMask is one of a suite of integrated plug-ins which will be rolled-out in 1998. The other plug-ins are EdgeWizard, which will automatically blend edges and create other edge effects, and ChromaZone, which will provide recoloring capabilities. MagicMask is well worth a close look. $99.95

DitherBox 1.0 is a Photoshop plug-in that extends the 216 color-safe Web palette to millions of colors. It does so by creating hybrid colors which are composed of single pixel blends of color-safe colors. To create purple, a color not in the Web safe palette, for example, the user would use alternating red and blue pixels. The new color will not dither because it is composed of colors from the Web-safe palette. The new color can be used like any other, and can be used for fill or paint. Boris FX 3.0 is a sophisticated digital video effects generator in the form
of a software plug-in. The tab-based interface provides precision controls
for creating high-end, broadcast quality digital video effects which are
common to television production, such as page turns and tumbling cubes
transitions. The collection of over 200 customizable effects are also
useful for film and multimedia production, for such things as 3D flying
logos, animations and titles.
The program, which has been used in feature films such as Volcano and Air
Force One, works with several standard video editing packages, including
Avid MCXpress, Media 100, In-sync Speed Razor, D-Vision OnLine, Adobe
Premiere, and Adobe After Effects.

Font Gander Pro is one of those "must have" font utilities that not only displays and prints both Type 1 and TrueType fonts, but also includes a unique editor that lets users design their own type specimen sheets. Gander Quill is a sophisticated page specimen editor that supports up to 99 fonts on a single page. Up to 63 unique page specimens can be addressed directly from the within Font Gander Pro. Fonts can be opened from inside the program, or dragged-and-dropped on the Font Gander icon. The program supports the processing of single fonts on up to entire folders or disks. The clipart images are primarily in vector format (a portion of the Windows collection is in bitmap format); the photos are 72 dpi, 24-bit, 340 x 220; and the fonts are in TrueType (700) and Type 1 (1000) formats.
The clipart, most of which is in full-color, and the fonts, are presented in an indexed manual. Most importantly, software is provided for managing this massive collection. The Corel Photo Browser Database supports management of the photo collection; the Visual Multimedia File Manager makes it easy to locate clipart images; and the font utility (Font-Master for Windows, MasterJuggler for Macintosh) supports the installation and use of fonts.

Phone Search USA 3.0 is a CD-ROM-based phone book with over 96 million business and residential listings for the entire U.S. Listings from the directory can be mapped using DeLorme's mapping software, Street Atlas USA 4.0.
The new "reverse search" function can be used to locate the name and phone number when the address is entered. With just a street name, the program returns a list of all residents and businesses on that street. Searches can be conducted by name, phone number, address, or SIC code; and searches can be filtered by name, street, city, state, phone exchange or ZIP code.
The user can export data, or portions of data, to databases or contact managers. The data can also be printed onto Avery labels. A steal at only $29.

Print Preparation Training Suite (MAC/WIN)
The Print Preparation Training Suite is a set of CD-ROM-based instructional materials addressing Printing Prep in QuarkXPress and PageMaker, and Trapping in Illustrator. The set is the first to combine interactive tutorials, concept and background information, competency tests, and an online glossary. The background information is augmented with QuickTime movies that demonstrate a particular concept. The tutorials show how to accomplish a particular task, and involve the user in making on-screen selections. Each CD-ROM contains up to eight hours of training.
These training CDs are the first to provide a variety of training approaches, making them more likely to maintain a learner's interest, and generate motivation.
The company has a liberal trade-in policy, accepting competitors' titles as partial payment for theirs, and also a very attractive upgrade program. Individual titles are $79.95 to $99.95. This suite of three titles is $149.95. A suite of four titles is $189.95; five titles are $219.95.

PageCharmer may be the easiest way yet to produce designer Java applets for creating interactive Web pages. The application works from within Netscape or Explorer, providing all documentation, the actual user interface, and a display of how the applet will appear. The user can interactively change the applet's parameters and settings until the desired effect is achieved. When that point is reached, the user clicks the "HTML" button, and the HTML code is created. The user simply copy-and-pastes the code into their Web page.
The applet library which is provided in PageCharmer is divided into four parts: Smart Image Maps, Multi-media Buttons, Animated Marquees, and Scrolling Tickers. The options available with each applet provide for the possible creation of millions of unique effects, all without HTML coding or Java programming. The program is an impressive programming feat which adds dynamic elements to Web page designs, quickly and easily. $139.95

Ahoy! is a useful piece of Internet communications software that supports direct connections between users, without the need for servers or intermediary parties. The software makes it possible for two users (even those with dynamic IP addresses) to make contact and chat. $24.95

CyberStudio 2.0 (MAC)
In June, I reviewed CyberStudio 1.1 (http://www.printerport.com/kdp/issues/v2n5.html) and pointed out how this HTML editor breaks from tradition. Since then, CyberStudio has become my HTML editor of choice and I am very pleased with the new version.
One of the best features of CyberStudio since version 1.0 is its recognition of many different technologies like Java, JavaScript, and Apple's MCF. Version 2.0 also supports ActiveX and makes dynamic content integration with WebObjects far easier than it has ever been.
The new version also supports link checking, spell checking, and better support for frames. Give it a try -- you may never look at HTML authoring the same way again. The GoLive web site has a free trial version and online ordering.

An industry study by Peripheral Strategies suggests that up to 80% of files stored on-line are inactive. Inactive files take-up valuable storage space, complicate file management and retrieval, reduce productivity, and increase the overall cost of file storage.
Storage Wizard uses a rule-based system to identify the oldest, least recently used files, and then works in the background to move, migrate, compress, or even delete old files. Rules can determine how much of a disk is to remain free, and what criteria are to be used to qualify files for migration or deletion.
When files are moved to a secondary storage location the program can leave behind an alias, which serves as a pointer. If the file in question is needed again, clicking on the alias icon retrieves it back to its original location.
The program offers several flexible options for accomplishing routine disk grooming. Files can be compressed in standard StuffIt (.sit) format, can be held in a holding area for manual inspection, can be mirrored between a source volume and storage volume, can be added to an "archive candidates" list for review, can be moved directly into the trash, or can be flagged with a Finder Label or Color as they age. In addition, files which are never to be archived can be permanently "anchored."

Font Reserve (FR) provides a complete database environment in which fonts (the actual fonts, their aliases, or a combination of the two, as chosen by user preference) are managed. Fonts can be added to the database by dropping a suitcase, folder, or entire volume on the FR icon. One of the biggest concerns of digital publishers is the management of digital assets. Now that virtually every element of every form of published material is in a digital format, it has become essential to be able to manage assets so that they can be archived, retrieved and reused. There are several products available for that purpose, but one, iView, is unique in several respects.
The iView interface provides views of its image catalog as a list of names, list of thumbnails, variably sized images, or as a slide show. The user can make and maintain an unlimited number of catalogs (depending on available disk space) with up to 8000 multimedia elements per catalog. The program does not duplicate the digital asset. It records the address path, thereby producing very compact and portable catalogs.
Images can be added through normal menu selections, or more easily, with drag-and-drop, making it possible to catalog an entire folder, disk, CD or volume of elements in one step. The program supports most popular file formats, including JPEG, GIF, GIFf, TIFF, TIF, Photoshop (single layer), Kodak PhotoCD, MacPaint, Silicon Graphics, PICT, QuickTime movies, QuickTime VR, Fonts (which can be viewed in different sizes and with different sample text), animated GIFs, EPS, clips, and startup screens. QuickTime movies, VR files and animated GIFs can be played back from within the program. In addition, iView detects the URLs of images that are dropped from Web browsers, such as Netscape Navigator.
After images are placed in an iView catalog the user benefits from several options. The images can be organized and presented in several formats, and on the basis of flexible search routines. Each file can contain an information tag consisting of descriptive text, including name, size, type, location, comments, keywords, dimensions, resolution, date, and more. Each of these tag elements can be used for sorting or searching. The annotation scheme adheres to the American standards which have been implemented by newspapers, magazines and publishing houses, and which are compatible with Adobe Photoshop file info. Selected images can be launched with the applications that created them, and because the digital asset need not be on-line to be in the catalog, the program will prompt the user to insert the needed volume when necessary. Items can be copied to the Clipboard, dragged as clips/files/HTML formatted pathnames to the finder or to any drag and drop aware application.
Perhaps its most valuable feature is printing. The user can print complete catalogs, with titles both of the catalog name and asset names, and with as many or as few items per page as they require. This particular capability has been missing in the realm of digital publishing software, and justifies the purchase of this program on that basis alone.

It allows individuals to communicate copyright ownership in their photography, illustrations and other digital images worldwide at no cost.
